Elizabeth City

There are plenty of reasons why Elizabeth City is called the "Harbor of Hospitality." Cruise along the downtown waterfront: you might see boaters gathered for an impromptu dock party; a costumed tour guide with guests in tow; or maybe a gallery opening in full swing along the city's Mayberry-esque Main Street.

Less than an hour's drive from the Outer Banks via U.S. Route 158 you'll discover an accommodating harbor with an enticing charm.

A must-see stop is the Museum of the Albemarle, the northeastern regional branch of the North Carolina Museum of History. In the new, permanent exhibit, "Our Story," look for the cannon purportedly fired by the notorious pirate Blackbeard. Step inside a Colonial-era farmhouse. More than 750 artifacts and displays bring the story of the Albemarle region to life.

For an even closer look at the city's history, pick up the Elizabeth City's Historic Walking Tour magazine for a self-guided stroll through the city's six historic districts. If you prefer a guided tour, book one with De'Tours of Elizabeth City. Or enjoy an old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage ride offered by Carolina Carriages.

History abounds in Elizabeth City – as do educational sites.

At the Elizabeth City State University Planetarium, visitors can get a sky full of information when they attend one of the themed star and laser shows. Families can interact with the science around them at Port Discover Hands-On Science Center, which offers free programs for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. And when you tour Air Station Elizabeth City, you can meet actual search and rescue aviators and divers like those depicted in the motion picture "The Guardian."

Elizabeth city has the arts covered too. A great place to browse is Arts of the Albemarle, which represents more than 200 artists and craftsmen. If for you "the play's the thing," reserve tickets at the intimate Main Street Stage for a presentation by the Encore Players, or check the College of the Albemarle's performing arts series.
