Ayden

Ayden is and has for many years been the quintessential charming, quaint, small Southern town. Among Ayden’s assets are its lovely downtown, its inventory of residential and commercial architecture, its pristine open spaces and its proximity to the economic juggernaut that is its sister city Greenville.

As home to eastern North Carolina’s largest university and regional healthcare system—with the creative workforce, technology and culture of entrepreneurship that arises in such settings—Greenville offers an extraordinary window of opportunity for Ayden. It is this opportunity that is now serving as a catalyst to inspire Ayden to craft a unique future as a creative community.

Towns, like Ayden, that have grown up around the Neuse River Basin (see description below) have seen much of the country’s turbulent history. From first exploration by English colonists to protestation against British tyranny to invasion by the Union Army during the Civil War, the Neuse River Basin has been the stage for many major events in U.S. history. A number of the region’s towns have been preserved with an eye toward the past, but with an ever evolving commitment to the times.  The vast countryside is punctuated by farms and crossroad communities and opulent plantation homes that are reminders of another era.

The Neuse River Basin runs across North Carolina from the central Piedmont to the coast. It flows approximately 200 miles from its headwaters in Orange and Person counties to its mouth at the Pamlico Sound. The Neuse contains over 3,000 freshwater stream miles and its drainage basin encompasses all or part of 23 counties, including Pitt (and the Town of Ayden). The basin supports 1.01 million people, comprising 14.9% of the state residents.
